Regulation of Medical Trials

In the UK, Medical trials are conducted within European legislation and two government bodies approval, before the start of any clinical procedures. The government bodies are

the Research Ethics Committee (or any other independent, self governing Ethics Committee). The REC have specially trained members in research ethics and have the experience which will be useful in scrutinizing the ethical aspects of a research proposal. The Research Ethics Committee can include patients, members of the public, nurses, GPs, hospital doctors, statisticians, pharmacists and academics, as well as people with specific ethical expertise gained through a legal, philosophical or theological background.

the MHRA -Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency- experts assess all applications for new medicines to ensure that they been tested to the required standards.
